Blackwell Plastics

is a privately held business established in 1939. A founding company in the plastics process industry, Blackwell Plastics provides custom injection molding and extrusion to mid-sized manufacturing companies in the south central United States.

Situation

The recent recession and trends towards outsourcing tooling and production to Mexico and Asia have had a devastating effect on the American plastics industry. While they watched many of their peers close their doors, Blackwell Plastics turned to TMAC to address their challenges: to successfully compete with large companies and foreign manufacturers.

Solution

Determined to weather the changing marketplace, Blackwell Plastics launched an effort to improve customer service and profitability by employing the standardized guidelines called out by ISO 9001-2000. As a small company with limited resources, the flexibility and expertise of the TMAC staff allowed them to comply with ISO standards and prepare for the audit at an affordable cost.

ISO standards require companies to evaluate their operations and determine how to streamline processes. TMAC designed, developed and implemented a documented quality management system satisfying the requirements of the ISO 9001-2000 Quality System. This quality management system will enable the company to improve customer focus, bring greater product consistency, and facilitate continuous improvement.

Results

Through the implementation of these quality standards, Blackwell Plastics has realized reduced costs and improved customer satisfaction. They have increased their employment from 35 to 70, and are steadily growing their business. Jeff Applegate, President of Blackwell Plastics, says, “TMAC has provided a unique option that allowed us to use our internal resources for much of the leg work, while they provided the expertise in ISO 9001-2000 standards for a cost that we could afford. Without the help of the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center, we would continue to fall further behind the larger domestic and foreign competition.”
